Hamilton wins thrilling Spanish Grand Prix

After Sebastian Vettel won the Russian Grand Prix pole and Valtteri Bottas won the race, it’s Lewis Hamilton who has instead stormed back to win the pole for today’s Spanish Grand Prix.Third place victor and Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia, left, celebrates on the podium with second place victor and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany at the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo, Spain, Sunday, May 14, 2017.Kimi Raikkonen and Valtteri Bottas both retired from the race – the former on the opening lap and the latter deep into the race. “I just really have to congratulate and thank my team”.Hamilton’s second win in five races this season cut Vettel’s lead from 13 points to six heading into the Monaco GP. This time lost, coupled with a second pitstop that didn’t take advantage of the Virtual Safety Car period, unlike Hamilton, meant Vettel was eventually caught and passed by his main championship rival.Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished third but 72 seconds behind Vettel.Every driver, 1, 2 & 3 on the Podium, was lapped during a terrific race that saw Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen and last year’s victor, Max Verstappen, crash out on the 1st lap.So he arrived back on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with high hopes to repeat his victory, especially given that his Red Bull team had spent the previous two weeks introducing upgrades to try and close the gap on title favorites Mercedes and Ferrari.”My start was good, I saw Lewis struggle with wheelspin, and kept looking in mirror to see if anybody else had a better start”.Vettel emerged side by side with Hamilton, forcing the Brit off track and taking the lead again, but seven laps alter Hamilton swept past Vettel to regain the lead and maintaining it to the chequered flag.Vettel now has 104 points to Hamilton’s 98.”As I said, I didn’t say anything bad, just be careful that it was very very very close but I enjoyed it and I was glad I was able to afterwards to have a battle, without any damage nothing lost between the two”.Hamilton would not be denied for long, however, and he got close enough to use a DRS boost and surge past Vettel with 22 laps to go.Vettal did all he could to beat Hamilton with a thrilling move to pass Bottas that will be replayed for some time to come. When Vettel made his stop, and exited the pits, the pair sped side by side toward the first corner with Vettel just about managing to hold onto the lead.”That is how racing should be”, said a delighted Hamilton.”Obviously, Lewis then stayed out longer, mirrored our strategy, so I knew in the end it would be crucial and when he came out (of the pits) I was surprised it was so close”.Sergio Perez claimed fourth and Esteban Ocon followed him home in fifth, meaning they are now the only team to have scored points with both drivers in every race this season.
